Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

And here’s the thing, I kind of already have. Brené Brown says we should embrace vulnerability so here goes: I want to write a book. This book:

What Do You Call A Single Girl? — The Way The World Sees Single Women Is A Joke.

Each chapter centers around one word that’s typically been attributed to single women (sad, crazy, etc) or one word I’d like to start using to describe us (free, happy). It is part memoir, part how-to, it is my hope that it changes the way being single is seen, felt, and discussed. I want to make women feel better. This is how.

In April of 2019, my agent began sending my book proposal to editors. After many months, and well over 30 “no”s, I can’t feel this as a failure. I choose instead to see it as an opportunity. The proposal of my book contains its first four chapters. In re-reading them recently, it became overwhelmingly necessary to release one of them. They’re the best work I’ve ever done, and they deserve more light shining on them than what they’ll get hidden in a PDF somewhere.

I recently published the first chapter of this book on Medium, it centers around the word “intimidating.” You can read it here, and if you enjoy it, the one thing you can do that will help me more than anything is share it. Share it with someone who needs to read it. Along with all those “no”s, I always heard the same feedback: “She’s such a good writer, but there’s no audience for this.” I disagree, because there’s you.
