Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

13 Brilliant Buys For Single Women In February

13 Brilliant Buys For Single Women In February

It’s February. I don’t know what to tell you. We’re cold, we’re ignoring V*lentine’s Day, and we’re probably looking for activities that don’t require real pants. This February I’ll be doing a little traveling, but really I like to nest in the coldest months. Spring cleaning comes way too late in the year if you ask me, because once the weather is nice i’m in Prospect Park with a book and an iced coffee, not meeting the underside of my bed with a Swiffer cloth thank you very much. Thus, many of the smart buys for February below will pertain to around-the-house needs, with a few other gems in there I couldn’t wait to show you.

I’ve also outlined a rather extensive list of gifts for single women to buy for themselves or another person they think is awesome during this love-centric season, if you’re so inclined. Happy February.

Plz ship overnight.

Smol Chocolate: First of all, buy whatever size box of chocolate you want. I’m listing this one here because it’s the one I got and because it’s not Valentine’s Day themed in any way. Please feel free to opt for larger versions, I just can’t have too much sugar because I’m hypoglycemic and shit gets weird. But, I still wanted to do something in the realm of sweet treat around a cursed holiday to make things a little nicer all around. In general, I am not a fan of Valentine’s Day candy, so I’m really aiming high quality with this stuff because if I’m going to dabble in romantic confectionary, I want to get it right. This is a box of twelve that’s so cute I kind of can’t stand it. There are countless ways to secure a treat or two on the old internet, I myself have just wandered down a chocolate rabbit hole from which I’ll never return, so have fun.

I am SO excited.

Jessica Simpson’s Autobiography: You really have to love that this book title is both a real title, a metaphor, and a physical directive to the reader all at the same time. There’s genius in this, and given that I just finished watching the Taylor Swift documentary last night, I am here for stories from women who have been told and expected to behave in ways unauthentic to them finally coming forward with some damn truth. I am on my way to a bookstore to buy this IRL for weekend reading, but it’s also available online. Also now is a good time to remind you that Jessica Simpson’s fashion brand brings in ONE BILLION in sales every year. One billion.

*Update, it was sold out everywhere I went/called. I will have to wait to read this but if you see it, GRAB IT.

Yes, please, now.

Extremely Cute & Affordable Bag: I’ve been holding onto this one for you for quite awhile, intending to place it in a spring/summer list, but I am sick of waiting, it is too cute. It’s also LESS THAN $18. This soft, super mod bag falls into what I call “leaving the house for fun reasons” accessories. It’s not your work bag, you’re not taking this traveling abroad, you’re using this to carry your phone, your wallet, a mini dry shampoo, and not much else. It’s the cutest night out bag (or if you’re me, day out bag), and it comes in eight colors. This color’s my favorite though.

I clearly need this.

Clear Version Of Same Bag: Yep, it comes in clear, too! For those of you who like major sporting events or don’t mind the world seeing your crumbled granola bars for some reason, this bag also comes in clear and is incredibly cute. Personally, I would remove the (quite frankly, ugly) drawstring insert - it’s totally removable - and either insert another pouch of my own, or just toss everything in and not care about people’s judgments. I want to take this to a pool party right now.

This changes everything.

World’s Cutest Litter Box: All I can say is, watch the video. This thing is brilliantly designed, actually adorable, and not one of those fancy electric littler boxes you’re pretty sure you’ll never figure out how to use. It’s entirely manual, no electricity or batteries involved. It’s EASY to use, the front pops off and you scoop using the scoop that fits inside the cover itself. If Clementine wasn’t 13 years old and set in her ways we’d have a very different situation in our bathroom right now.

The Comfy: I’m resisting the urge to call this the “hangover hoodie” but my god. Add this to your collection of couch clothing for the remainder of the winter months or even the summer months when you’ve gotten a little overzealous with the A/C. I mean seriously I fear for the future of throw blankets because this thing renders them irrelevant.

Bed Shelf: Whether you life in a tiny space without room for a true nightstand or just want this around for flu season or Netflix bingeing, this shelf is really smart. It’s very affordable and designed specifically for this purpose, so you can be confident your mug of TheraFlu is going to stay right where you put it. Those of us who take care of our damn selves when we’re sick will really appreciate a shelf of necessaries that doesn’t require a trip out of bed.

umbra-woodrow-storage-stool-wood.jpg

Umbra Storage Stool: I am absolutely obsessed with Umbra as an interior design brand. I love how functional and stylish their products are while simultaneously not costing one million dollars. Case in point, this V cute stool that is also storage. Who among us couldn’t use extra seating or a spare flat surface? Or a place to store off-season shoes? I could find about 17 uses for this item in every room in the house, the least of which would be a receptacle for all of the cat trash papers and strings my animal uses to amuse herself when company comes over.

New Unmentionables: Hello, my name is Shani and I buy my underpants on Amazon. Why wouldn’t I?? They’re affordable, the come directly to my door, and there are so many pretty colors. I also REALLY like that these are available in sizes 0-22. I’ve listed the lacy band thong style here because I like underwear that doesn’t cut into my hipflesh, but there are lots of variations for you to explore if you’re so inclined.

Slim Rack On Wheels: Yamazaki is also one of my favorite brands for small space solutions and just brilliant, minimalist home decor in general. This is a little sliding rack for spices and such that I didn’t think I’d need until I moved into an apartment that has one built into the cabinets. It is SO much easier to slide out a little rack than go digging through cabinets, and I am not the sort of person who displays her spices with pride. In my mind that’s just one more thing (or like 36 more things) to dust every weekend, so they stay tucked away in one of these. I love Yamazaki’s accessory trays too, both for jewelry and also just on my desk as a catch-all. If you are someone who needs extra closet space without the existence of an actual closet, this leaning ladder will work nicely with minimal assembly required.

We live in the future.

Trash Robot: Hey guys, do you like doing chores? Neither do i! Let’s outsource one. This trash robot is a trash can that bags and seals your trash for you. Did you hear what I just said. Seriously, watch the video, it’s genius. And while yes, this trash can is small, our trash volume should be, too. And because you’re probably already amazing at separating and recycling all your non-trash trash, this should handle the trash trash juuuuust fine. I love robots.

I’ll take seven.

Something Pretty: It is REALLY hard for me to contain myself on BaubleBar. Ever since the purchase of my first Alidia ring, I’ve been obsessed with decorating my phalanges with more of them. This one is pinky sized, $12, and necessary. If you have the stamina and perhaps restraint, there are countless other rings, necklaces, and dreamy accessories that are an affordable way to love your jewelry collection. Also, BaubleBar is currently doing 5% cash back with Rakuten, which is a plug in for your browser that gives you cash back on endless things you buy online without you lifting a finger. It is very easy to instal and I make about $150-$200 in cash back every year without doing anything. It’s V easy to set up, too, you needn’t be intimidated.

hashtag-home-brantley-floating-desk-hashtag-home.jpg

Floating Desk: Most of the small space, fold-away desks I’ve seen are ugly. There, I’ve said it. But this one isn’t. This one is actually cute both when open and closed, and is really smart for someone who enjoys a morning coffee with a little light emailing and blog reading. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone who works from home a ton, because you’ll likely need more items close at hand than you want to leave to the strength of screws driven into your walls, but if you casually want a desk and don’t want to commit floor space to it, this one is brilliant.
