Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

Valentine's Day Gifts For Single Women To Buy Themselves

Valentine's Day Gifts For Single Women To Buy Themselves

It’s February! And while there are fabulous things about February such as the fact that it’s Black History Month, there is one super annoying thing about February: Valentine’s Nonsense. Not the actual holiday, that’s all fine, it’s the subject lines and Instagrams and marketing moments that love to show up in February, seemingly serving as reminders of everything single people cannot, and do not have. Pardon my sass, but fuck that sideways. I am of the belief that single women can have whatever they want, regardless of whether or not a thing is typically “reserved” for couples.

Thus, I give you this list of Valentine’s Day gifts intended to be purchased by you, for you. Don’t let popular practice tell you what is and is not “for you.” If something comes in two servings, that means you get to have it TWICE. Anything you want is for you, even if it’s a giant heart shaped box of chocolates. Damn, I somehow left that off the list…

Vanessa Mooney Cherry Heart Ring: Above, this is the actual Valentine’s Day gift I bought myself. No bullshit, it’s in the email to me as we speak. I love things shaped like hearts, and dammit I’m allowed to wear them even when I’m not in love. In the past, I’d have been wary of doing that, thinking it wasn’t “for me.” The ring is pretty. I’m wearing it. The end. I intend to wear it on the index finger of my left and and pretend I’m on my way to some sort of fabulous ball or something.

Alaffia Everyday Shea Body Lotion: Love is making sure your epidermis is well tended to. Is anyone else’s skin absolutely CRACKING OPEN? This winter has involved a LOT more time indoors with forced air than any winter before, and my skin is showing signs. Alaffia’s lotion is made with handcrafted, certified fair-trade unrefined "raw" shea butter, and contains no sulfates, parabens, phthalates, silicones, mineral oil, artificial color or synthetic fragrance. The products are fair trade, cruelty-free. and very highly rated. I have their lavender hand soap in my bathroom and I LOVE it. (Pro tip, I slather myself in lotion and then I don’t rub it in all the way. I just put on some comfy pajamas and watch HBO Max and then the next day I wake up feeling great.)

New Underwear: It’s always so funny to me how sexy lingerie that’ll be worn for ten minutes gets so much attention but luxury underwear that you wear literally all day every day is considered an extravagance. I want to feel comfortable and lacy all damned day, thank you. Also, it’s just nice to replace your old underwear with something better. I said it. If you’re looking for a more affordable set, I’ve been wearing these for years, but just know they tend to get tattered and worn far sooner than my Hanky Pankys.

Heated Deep-Tissue Massager: In addition to turning our skin into the texture of a dried-up riverbed, the pandemic is turning us all into sore pretzels with terrible posture. This massager has INSANELY high ratings and can be used all over the body, not just your shoulders. We can’t all live with professional masseurs, and even if we did I bet always asking for massages would be annoying. This seems like a better solution.

Ritual Bath: Whatever rituals you assign to bath time, it’s really hard to argue with the positive effects of your time in the tub. Haus of Hoodoo offers a wide variety of ritual baths, you can choose the one that stands out to you the most, but I like this Beauty ritual bath, as my baths are often so tied to how I feel (or want to feel) physically. Prepare to spend quite awhile watching the proprietor’s instructional videos, they’re informative and will make you excited to try so many products.

Pajamas: Obviously we’re a pajama crew. There’s really never a bad time for us to treat ourselves to a new pair, and certainly not around Valentine’s Day. These pajamas are REALLY highly rated, come in a wide range of sizes and colors, and they’re $45. Hello.

Torso Trinket Tray: I kind of can’t handle how much I love this little tray. Obviously it’s perfect for jewelry and trinkets but I love the idea of using it as a placement for your salt & pepper shakers, crystals, or desktop odds and ends.

Megababe Le Tush: Winter is when my skin revolts. The texture of my skin changes wildly in winter, and this is literally the only product I’ve ever found that restores it to smoothness. I love SO many of Megababe’s products, but this is far and away my favorite. Just apply it for three minutes pre-shower whoever you have rough or bumpy skin, and after three uses you will be RESURFACED. I’ve included it in lists before, I’m sure I will again. It’s SO GOOD.

Feminist Book Club’s Valentine’s Package: Whenever someone creates a Valentine, like an actual Valentine to send to someone that’s NOT COUPLES THEMED, I get excited. You’ve seen me mention this outstanding book club before, but for V-Day you can send a friend (or yourself) one of six titles paired with a scented candle, chocolate, or both, and it SHIPS FREE! They actually have so many outstanding bundles to choose from, but this one is specifically for Valentine’s Day and specifically NOT couple-love themed, so I’m sold.

Varley Pullover: I love Varley so much. They make sweatshirts more stylish than they have any right to be. My personal favorites are their half-zip situations, something I wasn’t clever enough to appreciate back in the 90s when I was a but a girl. They give me sporty soccer mom vibes in the most chic way possible. If you are sick to death of your comfywear, because that’s literally all we’ve worn for a YEAR, this is a solid upgrade.

Cute Masks: There’s no greater self-love and community-love gift than health. Spruce up your mask collection (we all have one at this point, and mine are WORN OUT) with these comfortable cuties from Splendid, that come in a set of three. I LOVE Splendid’s fabrics, thus I would also like to wear them on my face.

Love Bracelet by Maison Irem: Think you can’t wear something that celebrates love when you’re not “in love”? I THINK THE FUCK NOT.

Cutest Cat Mug: This is just the cutest mug I’ve ever seen, and I love that it comes with a lid. My biggest pet peeve is how quickly my coffee gets cold, which is one of the reasons I’m an iced coffee all year kind of person. This mug is a simple way to make mornings more adorable and practical at the same time.

Heart Bracelet by Brinker & Eliza: Again, hearts. We can wear them! For any reason we want! Even if we just like the damned shape! The idea that we have to wait for love-centric jewelry until it’s given to us was one firmly baked into me for a long time, but it isn’t anymore. If you’re more maximalist than minimalist, you’ll love this brand.

Free Your Mind Candle: If you’re going to name a candle after an En Vogue song, you have my attention. I can’t stop burning candles this year, they’ve become a real comfort, and I love the way this Etsy maker themes theirs.

Mug Warmer: One of my favorite ways to show ourselves self love is convenience. Take something annoying and make it not annoying anymore. As I’ve mentioned, my coffee gets cold WAY too fast and I end up spending my mornings walking back and forth to the microwave. This little guy will keep my coffee at a drinkable temperature for as long as it takes me to drink it. Annoyance solved.

Full Body Bath Pillow: Why on earth didn’t I think of this sooner?? It’s not like our necks are the only things that need comfort as we sit in the tub! This full-tub-length bath pillow SERIOUSLY improves the comfort and quality of bath time. I have dreams of living in a home where my bath and shower are two separate entities so that I don’t have to scrub down my tub before AND after every single bath, but it’s nice to have goals.

The Only Matching Set We Really Need: You guys….are you seeing this? You’re seeing this right? Tell me you wouldn’t book a professional photo shoot for you and your pet the SECOND these arrived in the mail?? (They have more styles, but this one was giving me Beetlejuice vibes so obviously it’s my fave.)
