Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

9 Smart Purchases For Single Women In January

9 Smart Purchases For Single Women In January

I absolutely love January. January is the ideal month for single people. It isn’t a month of constant gatherings, everyone is pretty much keeping to themselves and trying to actually get their money’s worth out of their new ClassPass. January is sandwiched between the holiday season and V*lentine’s Day and is therefore our safe haven. It is the perfect month for accomplishing things, organizing things, and overall nesting activities of any sort. It is therefore my great joy to bring you a list of smart purchases single women can make in January that will upgrade their lives for the duration of the year.

Marie Kondo Everything

Marie Kondo changed my life. Okay fine she changed my sock drawer. But I am pleased to report that exactly one year ago I watched her Netflix show and decluttered my life immediately following. Oh sure, I’ve attempted an organized sock and underwear drawer before, but have any of my efforts lasted? NO. Obviously not. Then I tried her methods, literally FELT BETTER as a result, and now I’m hooked. A lot of her organization tips come from organizing things into little boxes. It seemed too simple when I first heard it, but the woman knows her shit. Please don’t feel the need to go out and buy $50 boxes from goop or whatever, this set here is less than $15 and will have you well on your way to an organized sock/underwear/lingerie drawer, and if there are boxes left over, use them in your nightstand. My 2020 goal is to deploy the box method in my giant kitchen utensil drawer, too. Good god.

Frame Things

We all have a stack of stuff we want to frame and hang on the wall. But actually finding frames that aren’t one million dollars sounds like an impossible task. Not so if you’ve discovered the beautiful world of Amazon basics. Frame those travel keepsakes, those old photos you stole from your mom’s house, all of it. Whether you’re just hanging a sweet reminder in your kitchen above the microwave, or you’re going full gallery wall, you can accomplish that most arduous of domestic aesthetic tasks easily, and affordably. My entryway is currently void of art, I’d like to remedy that asap.

Affordable & Easy Shelving

Nesting needs cannot be discussed without venturing into actual furniture. As a single woman, I’m often intimidated by big furniture purchases due to both cost and assembly required. No, admitting that does not make me a bad feminist, I’m just practical and I hate reading instructions. Good compromise: simple, affordable pieces that do a much heavier design lift than their price tags suggest. Everyone needs more shelves, somewhere. These shelves are REALLY affordable and do not look to have too many parts to mess with. They’re very highly rated on Amazon AND they’re cute which is why I mention them to you now. The one I’ve linked here is the 4-tier, but there’s also a 5-tier option if you need another shelf or want to place a couple of them together as a very solid alternative to a super heavy and annoying Ikea bookshelf. I also really like how they’ve arranged them in a bathroom setting which is the picture I used at the top of this post. The point is, get your crap off the floor, out of stress-inducing drawers, and beautifully organized and displayed. Packaging is cute for a reason now, people.

Something Fun For No Reason

I am a firm believer that we should smile during as many points of the day as possible. One way to do this is by staying the hell off Twitter, and other way I enjoy is having a coffee mug (collection?) that makes you laugh. I have recently discovered the wonderful world of LookHUMAN mugs on Amazon. They are hilarious, they are relevant, and there are like…hundreds of them. My personal favorite is the one shown here, but I am also partial to this one and this one, among others.

Under-Bed Wheely Storage

I don’t even need to sell you on this. We’re all one under-bed Amazon box away from losing our goddamned minds, let’s resolve to make productive, organized use out of a massive chunk of apartment real estate this year. My mom uses these for holiday decor and gift wrapping, and I think we all need to hop on that train.

Some Cozy

January, in addition to being a perfect month to nest, is also freezing. Bringing a cozy element or two into your home wouldn’t be the worst idea. I know we all instantly think of throw pillows and blankets for this purpose, but honestly how many of those do you need? Rugs are a massively functional way to make your place look and feel cozier while also delighting your feet every time you walk on them. I find rug buying intimidating because we all think we need massive rugs to cover entire rooms, but I think you’ll be surprised by how cozy a little 3x5 rug can make your bedroom for less than $45 bucks. place it at the foot of your bed at an angle, or under just the end feet of your bed, or use it in a corner to create a cozy nook. You will never be sad to have this plushness on your floor, I promise you. (Note to pet owners, you might want to opt for a darker color, or invest in a large bottle of Nature’s Miracle. Just a tip.)

A Damn Makeup Organizer

Honestly, just do this. I put this off for way too long, thinking that I wasn’t a face-chiseling MUA armed with a concealer wand and a ring light, so who cared? As it turns out, these will massively improve the way you feel about your bathroom or vanity. I should have done this ages ago, please learn from my mistakes. I have this one, but minus one set of drawers. I’m listing this one here because I wish I had this extra set of drawers. These work really well for jewelry and small crafty items, too.

Fridge Bins!

An organized fridge is better than Xanax. I made the switch this year to totally binned-out fridge as opposed to the usual culinary chaos and I am NOT mad at that decision. There’s just something calming about opening a fridge that doesn’t appear to be attacking you.

Humidifier That’s Actually Cute

This is a desktop humidifier that has a little plant pot built in and comes with a fake frikkin plant to put in it! (You can also put your own real succulent in there if you want.) I have no idea how it’s only 20 bucks but I’m SO into this. My heater tends to dry me out like it wants to turn me into fruit for trail mix so humidifying the air is necessary. Better still when the item fixing the situation isn’t an eyesore.
