Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

18 Smart Buys For Single Women In March

Welcome to March, the official beginning of “we have no idea what season it is until June” weather. Historically, I haven’t been the biggest fan of March, mostly because I’m either traipsing through freezing rain or doing my goddamned taxes, but this year I’ve decided to give March a chance. Poor March, she didn’t ask to be so random. Let’s help her out by shopping ourselves a little single girl happy. Below, a list of things that have been on my mind, and certainly in my cart, lately.

Open Book: If you follow me on Instagram you know I cannot stop talking about this book, and this queen. I found the book to be frankly fabulous and that’s before I even had a chance to identify with Jessica as someone who’s from the same part of Texas as I am, gone through massive changes, developed her sense of independence and identity, and made billions of dollars. (I’m still working on the billons, but let’s do this). I’ve given my copy away to a friend to read because this book is too good not to pass along. You’ll also be doing yourself a favor if you follow her on Instagram and absolutely die for her book tour ensembles.

Fresh Chucks: I am not a heels person. Jessica Simpson is, I am not. While I’m always a bit sad when winter ends (especially this year because I didn’t get a decent snow ONE TIME and I’m so sad), if there’s one thing that cheers me up, it’s more breathable clothing and accessories. I love a fresh pair of Converse in the spring, probably worn with a cuffed jean of some kind and a linen trench or long denim jacket. And my plantar fasciitis insoles because my feet are bullshit.

Wellness Formula: I have been taking this stuff since college and I have no intention of stopping now. It is simply my daily go-to for immune system support, period. I’ve made my stepdad start taking this, he’s into it. in addition to stress-fighting adaptogens (that’s right, Wellness Formula was using adaptogens before they were cool) this contains vitamin A, beta-carotene, vitamin D, and zinc to support a healthy immune system, plus echinacea, elderberry, and horehound to enhance immune function, and astragalus and isatis leaf and root. That’s enough science for one day, in sum: i no get sicky.

boy-smells-rosalita-scented-candle.jpg

A Candle Refresh: As much as I love my woodsy scented candles, eventually I have to learn to lighten up. For March, I’ll start entertaining the idea of spring by bringing in more floral candle scents. Not necessarily super light, but just a change in scent that moves from a winter vibe to one that’s a bit more romantic and brighter. I love Boy Smells candles, you cannot beat the price for the potency of the scents you get. I typically gravitate toward Purple Kush, but i’m giving Rosalita a try this month because it’s new and I’m easily marketed to.

picnic-time-five-piece-circo-cheese-board-and-tools-set.jpg

Solo Cheese Board Set: I don’t think i need to sell this crew on a cheese board, but if you’re the kind of person who’s been settling for like…a plate, this is a great way to get a board and the necessary knives with built in storage and lots of cheese-plate-for-one cuteness. Hashtag no sharing.

urban-outfitters-rooney-entryway-storage-mirror.jpg

Entryway Wonder Mirror: This is a coatrack, shoe rack, full length mirror, shelf, and purse-hangy place that does so much for your entryway woes I’m amazed it doesn’t also sweep the floors twice a week. I am a big fan of keeping a mirror by the front door, and also a big fan of my jackets not looking like a hot mess and stressing me out every time I ingress or egress my home. The shoe cubby is brilliant and convenient if you’re a no-shoes house, and if you don’t use it I imagine it’s precisely where your cat will want to sit. It leans but also needs what looks like one firm screw into the wall, but if you’d prefer a truly leaning option this one is super cute and still has that all-important mirror.

Extra Car Stuff Storage: Here we are just like…not using the space between seats, like heathens. This incredibly genius storage thingy nestles between your seats and makes commutes and road trips a lot less chaotic. It also prevents those impossible decisions you have to make when you have more beverages than you have places to hold them. Betwixt your legs does not count. All my freeway commute ladies, this one’s for you. Also, if the color of this plastic isn’t doin’ it for ya, this does exist in a black leather version, too.

osea-malibu-ocean-cleanser.jpg

Osea Ocean Cleanser: This might be my favorite cleanser of all time. I don’t say that to you lightly. As proof, when I broke my travel sized bottle by accident, I cried. I use this in the evenings to remove makeup and just generally relax me because it’s got one of those zen scents you want your entire home to smell like. Actually, while I’m at it, Osea please make a candle. It’s extremely non-drying and really removes your day’s makeup. I also love that Osea’s products come in glass as opposed to plastic. If the price tag scares you, try it in its smaller size and watch what happens when it starts running out and you start hoarding it. I actually just bought (like literally today) this travel duo that includes the brand’s Atmosphere Protection Cream, which is a great daily moisturizer, I’m planning to take them both on my trip to London & Paris next month to simplify the number of potions I take with me. Typically each travel size is $18 and this is $18 for the set, so you’re basically getting one of these babies for free.

Contact Lense Cases in Bulk: I will be sharing my full list of necessary solo travel items with you soon, but for now, get some contact lens cases. There is no more effective or leak-proof way to carry just enough of your toiletries with you when you travel. Honestly I put everything from BB cream to toothpaste in these babies. (I do write on the top with a Sharpie so I know what’s in there.) They’re very slim and so easy to drop into your one clear plastic baggie. I never go away for a weekend without them. Less waste, more fancy shampoo, amiright?

Chooka Rain Boots: What if this was the year we all committed to not hating our rain boots? Wouldn’t that be a treat? These boots from Chooka are actually lined in fleece, which at first seems too warm, but then actually reveals itself as genius, because who actually likes the way the inside of rain boots feel, even with socks? Also you kind of can’t beat this price, certainly not with this level of cuteness. I’m buying a pair, slipping in my dumbass plantar fasciitis insoles inside, and having a lovely spring.

Smart & Cute Food Storage: Why does enamelware makes us feel cool and rustic? I have no idea but I love the look of these storage containers. They’re smart for many reasons, namely they’re reusable, stackable, and way cuter than the random old pickle jars I’m currently using to store homemade salad dressing in. They also double for snacks when entertaining because again, so cute and cool.

$45 for six containers on Amazon

Rechargeable Flameless Candle Lighter: You know what I hate? Sticking my hand down to the bottom of an almost-over candle and burning the shit out of myself with matches. i also hate how those stick lighter thingies are essentially just more unnecessary plastic and I can’t refill them. This gadget is a flameless lighter that you can recharge. It is really highly rated on Amazon, has literally all of the safety features, and it’s also windproof, so those citronella candles on the patio won’t get the better of you.

Linen Scarf: Something you need to know about me — I love a cheap scarf. I have many. I change them with the seasons. I also travel with multiples of them in case one gets dirty or smelly. I will be taking a plethora of linen scarves with me to London and Paris this spring, but I also wear them nonstop with denim jackets and such when I’m home.

FABULOUS Shell Light: You know all those dumb “this is why you’re single” memes that make it seem like single women are single because it’s their own fault or something? I’m turning that backwards notion on its ass and saying the very existence of THIS SPECTACULAR THING is why you’re single, but rather—it’s the whole point of being single. We get to have sassy seashell lamps in our homes and boudoirs and no one’s around to say a damn thing about it! It’s also color changing and guaranteed to make you smile every single time you turn it on. It’s battery operated, so you can use it anywhere, and batteries are included! What is the point of being single if we can’t turn our homes into Nathan Lane’s dressing room in The Birdcage I ask you? Agador!

Very Female T-Shirt: In celebration of International Women’s Day 2020, Net-A-Porter is offering a wide variety of celebratory shirts that give back. This one, by Roxanne Assoulin, donates 100% of its profits to Women for Women International. I am also a huge fan of Staud’s contribution to Women’s Month, an oversized printed hoodie that has the same charitable benefit as the tee shirt above. Also just in general I like it when my clothing reiterates the superiority of our gender, I dunno.

Probiotics: Prior to taking a trip outside of the US, I begin a process I like to call “stomach fortification.” This usually involves adding a probiotic to my daily routine. I have a sensitive tummy and Paris does not, quite literally, give a shit. This probiotic was recently recommended to me by a friend, and it’s how I’ll be righting the wrongs my stomach likes to bestow upon me prior to my travels this spring. (I usually start at least a month before travel, FYI.)

Rose Quartz Necklace: I am 100% that crystal bitch. Rose Quartz, in addition to being beautiful, is the crystal of love and compassion. And yeah, you could wear it while you vision board your future partner, or you could wear it as a symbol of your love and compassion for your single (and fabulous) self. You can also opt for this more delicate version by Kendra Scott which will look so good layered. If you enjoy crystal content, let me know, because I am here for giving you more of it.

Screen Shot 2020-03-04 at 5.25.51 AM.png

Bread Box With Cutting Board Lid: I want to bring back the bread box. First of all, I know this crew loves baking bread and I bet we also have nothing to store it in, and further, it’s just a classy move. This version is extra versatile, as the lid is also a cutting board (cannot wait to impress friends with this), and keeping your bread in a bread box that’s specifically designed for this purpose will actually keep your bread fresher for longer. Something about a non-airtight seal? Also comes in black if that works better with your kitchen, and in a shorter style if you like…shorter bread, I dunno.
