Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

Smart Products For Single Women This Summer

Smart Products For Single Women This Summer

I feel like summer is taking its job very seriously, and 2020 is the kind of guy who drinks at work. It’s hot, and it’s chaos, but there’s hope. There are also smart purchases for single women that make life nicer, more comfortable, and just more customized to us overall. In the spirit of customizing life to suit the single set, I give you the list below. Stay cool. And wear your masks.

Kitchen Herb Kit: I’ve shopped for many a seed kit and may I say this is one of the most thorough and the cutest I’ve seen yet. It’s also made by an Etsy craftsperson so I know everything is fresh and I’m supporting an independent creator. Fresh herbs have been one of my coping skills during quarantine and that might sound weird, but it’s true. They’re a burst of green and lovely scent every time I open the fridge, and I find myself topping absolutely everything with some sort of gorgeous color and flavor. I love the idea of needing to go no further than my own counter for the good stuff.

Shopping Shorts: If you’re a longtime follower of mine, you will know about my pants particularities. These bike shorts are not like bike shorts I’ve written about in the past, because these are specifically for shopping. Long enough to prevent and thigh discomfort, high enough to be worn as real pants over some kind of cute tee, these shorts are affordable incredibly comfortable, and yes—I own multiple pairs. I call them shopping shorts because they have highly functional pockets on each leg, the perfect size for your phone in one, and grocery list, etc in the other. I don’t like having to rummage through my bag every time I want to change a song on Spotify or answer a text, and if my shopping list is close at hand, there’s a chance I might actually use it. Shopping shorts. Get into it.

Rabbit Vase: This is just a vase where you put the flowers in the rabbit’s ears and I want you to know it exists.

Magnetic Fridge Rack: Singles living alone may likely be suffering from, if not space constraints, then certainly storage constraints, and this awesome magnetic rack increases the functionality of your kitchen tenfold and takes up zero drawer or cabinet real estate while doing it.

Solidarity Cards: I am obsessed with snail mail. I want to make that very clear. I’ve been sending cards and letters throughout this quarantine and it brings me joy every time I place something in a mailbox. These cards are specifically for those of us who are white or non-black to send to our black friends in solidarity. I love the design and simply the thoughtfulness of it all. And actually, while I’m at it, this Etsy creator has a whole HOST of cute cards you need to check out, and snail mail to someone you love, asap.

Cooling Masks: Keep them in the fridge, just trust me. The next time you get out of the shower this summer and have trouble cooling down, or when you’re sitting in a bath and it’s all a little too much, stick a cooling mask that you’ve thoughtfully chilled right on your face and enjoy. You can keep any masks in the fridge by the way, as well as your face toners, rose water, etc. for a refreshing spritz.

Buy on Amazon

Couch Side Table: When there’s no one to bring you the things you want when you don’t want to get up, I find that a side table stocked with everything from La Croix to popcorn is the way to go. This table slides over your couch cushions so that you literally don’t even have to hit pause when you need a gummy bear. And like yeah, sure it’s good for work too.

Buy on Amazon

Fridge Freshener: It’s always nice to extend the longevity of your produce when you’re single, but especially now during COVID. You want to venture out as little as possible, and that’s easier when the bell peppers mind their p’s and q’s. These little guys sit in your fridge and help you out in the fruits and veggies department. And compartment.

Contact Paper: I frikkin love contact paper. It might be the nerdiest thing about me. Contact paper is an IDEAL DIY project for singles who have the ability to personalize their homes to their tastes and their tastes only. If you have a steady hand and a sharp knife or scissor, you can cover anything from vases to kitchen backsplashes in any pattern you want. It’s the easiest way to un-ugly things and I’m obsessed. You can also just use clear contact paper on any surface you love but want to protect.

Hello There Card: Again, snail mail. Get into it.

New, effective kitchen equipment: Dull knives are dangerous, gross cutting boards are…gross. This clever set comes with a sharpener and a brand new cutting board to make your kitchen projects safer, cleaner, and more colorful. (It’s also really affordable!)

Cooling Towel: I am happy to say that after product testing this little guy, it works. First, I walked around with a wet bandana around my neck. Then, I used this guy. You wet it, wring it out, and then tie it wherever you tend to overheat. It actually does work a lot better than normal fabric to keep you cool. I suggest getting the smaller size, as it’s still pretty big in terms of tying around your neck or head, I can’t even imagine how humongous the bigger size would be.

Buy on Amazon

Scandinavian Entryway Hook: Even if you have no entryway, you can have an entryway. Anyone sick to death of command hooks will enjoy the minimalist chic of this awesome hook thingy that turns the entry of your house into something other than a pie of belongings.

I’m sorry, is this CAT DRY SHAMPOO?!

Buy on Amazon

Hanging Baskets: I love a hanging basket! These have countless uses, you can do everything from organizing your kitchen to starting a window garden. To think…my spatulas don’t have to live in chaos!

Buy on Amazon

Affordable Plants: Bringing a bit of the outside in is key during quarantine. I love plants, but some of the newer plant sites feel really, really expensive. I found this affordable plant resource and wanted to share it with all of you. I would of course kill this plant, but I trust your thumbs are greener than mine.

Buy on Amazon

Fake Plants! If you kill plants or have pets that like to eat plants, I’ve also found an awesome resource for fake plants that don’t look terrible! I love the idea of a few fronds in a vase that need no more care than the occasional swiffer.

Cutest Art: Bare walls? Who needs ‘em! I challenge you to NOT smile every time you see this absolutely beautiful piece of art by Lovely Earthlings. The creator has a LOT more amazing art where this came from, but this Book Smart print is my personal fave. I also love how they’ve styled it on a bookshelf here, which is great for anyone who doesn’t want to nail holes in their rented walls or just wants a way to break up their book collection for a little visual variety.

Buy on Etsy

Cute, Affordable Masks: We all need ‘em, and they don’t have to be ugly. Or crazy expensive. These are $12.50 for five triple-layer adult masks. The reason I suggest a five-pack is that it’s summer—we sweat in these things. It’s nice to tuck an extra one into your bag and swap it out on super hot days when you need to.
