Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

All The Monthly Memberships I Subscribe To

The impetus for this post was me needing to create an accounting of all the little monthly expenses that add up to one big monthly expense called “memberships.” I assumed I’d take look at all those little “oooh I want that”s and decide….nah, I don’t really want that. However, I like all of this stuff. And I figured if I made this list and decided that there wasn’t anything on it that needed to meet the business end of a “cancel” button then I might as well tell you about them, too.

Medium: Medium is my favorite place to write because it’s the only place I can write publicly without needing an editor’s permission first. It is literally a blank page on which writers can work on their skills, share their thoughts, and build a following. It is also a place where writers can earn money. But, you have to be a member first. Join Medium for $5/month to simply support creators you love reading, but to ALSO become a paid creator yourself. I do not have an affiliate relationship with Medium but I STRONGLY recommend it to anyone I talk to who is interested in earning more via freelance writing, or simply wants to expand their portfolio.

FaceTory Sheet Masks: I’ve spoken about my love of FaceTory’s masks before, they are an incredibly affordable way to treat yourself and your face. Every month, for $8.90, I receive four sheet masks (the masks vary every month). That’s $2.22 per mask, and a steal. Amazon also sells them individually if you don’t want to commit to a monthly subscription, but I can tell you it is a treat to see this in my mailbox.

Birchbox: I have been a Birchbox member since it’s launch, and the success of my travel toiletry bag is entirely dependent on it. I took a break from this membership in 2019 in an effort to curtail the amount of tiny beauty products I owned and actually use them up. I did, and am now entirely thrilled to be receiving Birchbox again. I’m a big fan of small gifts we give ourselves, and I’ve never regretted tiny beauty products I either get to discover or use in-flight.

Spotify: I think it’s worth $9.99 a month to never have to hear a commercial while I’m listening to music. I can’t even think of the frustration that would add to my workday, so this is money I consider well-invested.

Squarespace: I host the very website you’re on now via Squarespace. For $26 each month, I have a digital resume, portfolio, blog, links page, etc, and I think every freelancer should have a centralized space for professional purposes, too. Also, having a very Google-able name, I wanted to make sure that there was an internet property out there that I owned, designed, and managed. Social media is all well and good, but I think we take it for granted that it will always be there, and always be functioning. If you’re an internet creator, I highly recommend having an internet property you own, and Squarespace is a very user friendly way to do that. If I can build this website, you can build yours, trust me.

Madison Reed: I have a lot of gray hair that you don’t need to know about. Madison Reed is the hair dye subscription I get every five weeks to make sure you never do. I’ve tried many different platforms for folicular forgery, and Madison Reed is by far my favorite. The color is gentle, the service is reliable, and $22 per month sounds a hell of a lot better than $70+ per month at a salon. FYI using this link gets you $15 off your first order, and I get $15 too for being an awesome hair dye recommender.

Patreon, Sarah Vrba: I’m not just a Patreon creator, I’m also a paying Patron! Starting a Patreon really made me think about the content I love consuming, and how much of that content is always consumable for free. But someone had to make it, had to put time and effort into it, and that’s why I became a patron of my favorite astrologer. I love Sarah Vrba’s style, she has a calmness and positivity to her that I really like. I find that many astrology resources can make me feel like gloom and doom are headed my way every time Mercury Retrograde approaches and Sarah takes a much different view. Her positivity and her welcoming energy are a really lovely presence in my day-to-day content consumption, and I’m very happy to pay her for it.

Buzzsprout: If you are thinking of starting a podcast, I obviously can’t recommend that enough, and I also highly suggest you host it on Buzzsprout. You have to host it somewhere, and it might as well be a place with a really easy user experience, clear stats reporting, and awesome customer service. Oh and it’s affordable, too. Check out Buzzsprout via this link and get a $20 gift card to Amazon when you sign up for a paid plan. I am on the $12/month plan and I pay for any overages as they come, my bill is never more than $16/month and I post four roughly hour-long podcast episodes each month.

Honorable Mention: My cat food on autoship.
