Hi, I’m Shani

I’m the host of A Single Serving Podcast and the author of A Single Revolution. I’m changing the narrative around being single, because so far it’s had pretty bad PR. I’m not an advocate for singlehood. I’m an advocate for women feeling good while single—there’s a difference.

The Only Animal Print I Allow In My Home

I don’t like animal print. Cheetah, zebra, mongoose, whatever — I don’t like it. I don’t wear it, I don’t have throw pillows in it, I live in Brooklyn, not the zoo. It’s always seemed kind of all-or-nothing to me, you either commit to animal print and make it a thing, or leave it out altogether because you’re worried about going full Austin Powers underground lair or something.

Another thing about my decorative tastes, I require rugs. I have rugs all over my house because I like the softness and coziness they offer while also keeping my feet off cold hard wood as much as possible. Because I love rugs and also have a cat, those rugs are often very, very affordable. I tend to buy small rugs that can be easily washed and dried, but when it comes to larger rugs, I tend to purchase fairly cheap ones in the event that they go the way of feline folly. Professional steam cleaning isn’t always in the budget, nor does it always make sense for a 5x7 living room rug I got for $75, so essentially it’s just me spot-cleaning and vacuuming until a rug is at its absolute end.

Isn’t she looooovelyyyy

This is my rug. It is the very first time I’ve seen something in animal print and needed it, immediately. It is a gray leopard print rug with canvas backing by nuLOOM that I got on sale (and you can too). I will admit to some nervousness about making such a large-scale animal print decision. It’s not like I brought this motif in via a set of new coasters or something. I fully committed to it in rug format and from the second I unrolled it (and flattened it with the Complete Works Of Shakespeare) I was in love. It’s the gray. The muted, elevated tone makes this version of animal print really cool and cozy, as opposed to overwhelming or too themed.

I miss my tree.

The photo above is from a New Year’s Eve gathering I threw last-minute. (Very last minute, there was a light Parisian theme as evidenced by my travel books serving as decor.) This is a good example of how my rug makes this whole place feel cozy. What I also love is that it doesn’t make my home look overpowered the way I was worried it might. It’s simply a super cute rug that I really hope my cat behaves herself on because I’d like to have it for quite awhile. If you’re reluctant to commit to one decor scheme or another, and kind of just want a great-looking rug that’s also affordable, I suggest this beauty. I’m wild about her.
